    Assignment 1:  Course Intention Journal

(4 pts) This is a five-paragraph initial course intention journal in the form of a reflective essay.  It is similar to a KWL chart and a form of applied/experiential learning.  This journal does not require any research citations/references to support your thoughts and ideas.  Again, think of this as a five-paragraph reflective essay focusing only on the headings provided below.

    The required headings are:

    ¶Introduction

¶As a student, what is your greatest concern regarding education right now and why?

¶If you could learn one thing about Dine Studies or Navajo Government as a student, what would it be and why?

¶Given your lived experience as a student and human being, what are your thoughts about Navajo culture and its role in our Navajo schools today?

    ¶Conclusion

    Assignment 2: World War II

(20 pts) Read the article and watch the video.  Answer the following question in the discussion section of Canvas. Post your reply.  Then read other posts by students.  Respond to 2 other posts by writing a comment. If you do not have access to Canvas, answer the question on a word document, ask two other classmates to respond, and add their reply to your document. Submit written responses to my gmail.

Post respectful comments.  In Navajo it's:  Ada hozhdilzin (Respect the  sacred nature of self) and Hazaad baa ahojilya (Have reverence and care of speech).

It is our goal to link our essential questions to all we do in class; who am I, where do I come from, where do I want to be and how I get there, are what we hope to accomplish by the end of the semester.  By reading the article and viewing the video, how do you demonstrate knowledge of the link between stories of the Navajo of the past and yourself and other tribes.  How does the story of World War I Code Talkers relate to that of World War II?

    Assignment 3: 1940s Advertisement

(50 pts) Familiarize yourself with the Era of time in which World War II happened. Knowledge of historical events and culture of the time is an excellent way to have a better viewpoint on circumstances.  To do this, safely, browse the Internet from that time.  In Part A’s assignment you will create an advertisement poster, or flyer, that promotes something popular of that time in America, i.e., a vehicle, motorcycle, fashion, music, movie, household products, etc.  Use only an 81/2 x 11 drawing or printing paper.  You may draw your ad or create it using any program such as Power Point, Google slides, Info graphics, Microsoft Publisher, etc.  You may use black and white as color TV was not available until 1953.

    Assignment 4: Current Event

(20 pts) It's important to understand the world around you.  We'll talk about the ripple effects; how one event leads to another.  What happens in our community, one way or another, will affect the people who occupy it.  Our Navajo Nation government makes decisions for the people and carries them out.  How does this affect who you are, where you come from, and where you want to be (how do you get there)?

    For this assignment:

    1.  Read 4 different news articles from the Navajo Times (no sports articles) and write four reviews.

    2.  Download, save and fill out the Current Event template (you'll have to use two templates for four articles as there is only space for two on one sheet).

    3.  Upload and attach your document to Canvas or email and send

    Assignment 6: Service Learning Project

What is Service Learning? According to Vanderbilt University, service learning is defined as: "A form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves."  It's a form of engagement. It’s about leveraging the need to do something good in the world as a means to help you hit your learning objectives. It’s about teaching empathy as well as literacy. It’s about teaching compassion as well as composition. It’s about teaching advocacy as well as academics.

(All projects should be safe.  Please confirm with your parent(s)/guardian(s) about your project and get their approval before you begin.  Remember Covid is still very much a part of our community; be cautious and keep yourself and your family safe.  All projects should take place in or around your home and family, where you know it's safe.)

Part A: (20) Journal Entries:  Identify your project, give it an exciting title.  Beginning with Day 1, I would like you to write in a journal about what part of the process you did that day.  As you reflect, write down:  Pluses (things that went well) and Deltas (things that need improvement).  Reflection is also a time to think of other possible ways to improve your actions or project, even what you might do for your next project!  Keep your journal entry for four days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).  You may also submit pictures attached within your document to show the progress of your project and/or final product.  You may use any type of medium to record your journal entries:  Power Point, Google Docs, Google slides, Word, photocopies, hard copy.  Submit it by email, in Canvas, or hard copy (See Note).

Part B: (30) Reflection:   Think back on what you gained from journeying through this project. Reflect on the following:

    • What did you learn about the topic?
    • What did you learn about yourself?
    • Do you now think differently?
    • What is your take on or experience with service learning?
    • How does this connect to our Essential Question(s):  Who am I? Where do I come from? Where do I want to be and how do I get there?  How can I address an important issue in our school or community and improve the situation?  How can teaching life skills benefit students (me)?

Submit your reflection, making sure you address all points, double space, page numbers by Gmail, Canvas, or hard copy.
